BP-alternative-energy

click-chevronBP Alternative Energy

BP Alternative Energy is creating a sustainable and secure energy future producing low carbon fuels and power while developing sustainable energy technologies.
In 2005, BP made a commitment to spend $8 billion over 10 years on alternative energy. We are investing at a faster pace than this and have invested approximately $7 billion, with over $4 billion in the US.
BP has a focused biofuels strategy: the production of ethanol from sugarcane in Brazil, developing advanced fuel molecules including biobutanol, and commercializing cellulosic biofuels technology. Biobutanol has a higher energy content than ethanol and is more compatible with existing engines. Our cellulosic biofuels technology will use lignocellulosic biomass from dedicated energy grasses to produce advanced biofuels.
In renewable power, Alternative Energy has 13 wind farms with over 1,000 turbines across seven US states. With 1730 megawatts of gross capacity, our wind farms can provide enough renewable electricity to power over 500,000 average American homes.
Our Emerging Business & Ventures unit aims to enhance long-term value for BP, both for its oil and gas assets as well as its low-carbon businesses by developing sustainable energy solutions. Our venturing investments span three broad areas: bio-energy, electrification and carbon solutions.
